End of Module Evaluation

Well what a module.

Looking back to the start of the module I can say that the style of design I have created is, in some respects not the the style of design I had planned it to be.
I say this because although my focuses of designing to create brands and Identity's have remained the same the style in which I approached them was different.

Initially I thought my design was starting to develop a more minimalist style and ethos and although some of my design did stick to this principle I found my self concentrating more on technical and detailed aspects of design.

I also found myself wanting to create more publications and this inevitably started me down the path of type and layout design. Something I was sure I wasn't in to.

I also now know through doing this module that I want to focus on resolving my briefs through print, rather than designing for screen.

Motion graphics is still something that I would like to sink my teeth into, especially now that I have found a new love for info-graphics.

No Nukes

After a bumpy start to the brief I decided to home in on some things that I decided I would focus on in my rationale. The primary being branding and Identity. Rather than doing a re-brand of an existing company I decided to brand an event which would be given a purpose.

designing the content for the exhibition went, in m opinion well. I designed some interesting pieces of design and also got back to terms with creating type as image work.

I designed a total of 5 posters and because it was the start of the first brief and the module I spent far too long on designing the content for the exhibition. This then left me to create the logos and to think of interesting methods of delivering and resolving the brief.

Although I am happy with the overall outcome, I do fell like my time management went down the drain and I became a too pre occupied with creating a huge range of deliverables.

Metrological Advancements

This brief came about after a tutorial with Fred when he suggested that designing a racing team for a metrological company was not appropriate as the company who owned the team would have no identity which is important when designing for motor-sport as it is extremely corporate.

This gave me the idea of designing an identity for a metrology company and then to use the livery car design as a format to spread the companies identity on to.

This was a brief that I felt when well. I came up with a strong corporate identity that was appropriate to who they were and what they did. I would have liked more time to design to incorporate the team more, but looking back I can see how it probably would't have been that appropriate to do so.

Little White Lies

At this point in the module I was very much running out of time. My lack of time management and clear decision making earlier in the module was begging to take its toll.

I designed the some variations for a cover for the film 'Drive' which I was satisfied with. I also managed to improve my skills on photoshop considerably and now often use photoshop and illustrator together when designing

NASA 30 years of the Space Shuttle

This was a brief that went well considering the lack of time I had. I spent the first week steadily thinking of clever ways to display information from some of NASA's space programs.

These ideas where then tested with snippets of the information I had found.

When doing this I began to realise just how much time is needed to create an information graphic. This is something that I will be focusing on for my FMP

Final photos for the final prints of the poster. I was pleased with the outcome and the quality of the print which was on gloss, especially considering the fact that the point size of the orbits was o.oo1

Next time I would like to include a simple vector of the space shuttle as i think this would tie the poster off very well.

The thirty years info will be placed at the lower centre of the poster. This will be the first thing the viewers read as it is the most important piece of information.

If you are a fan of the space shuttle then the date should be pretty obvious to you. However it has come to my attention that not all the viewers will be NASA geeks and that this date means nothing.

I will therefore be adding a picture of the space shuttle in to instantly give the the viewer an idea of what they are looking at

These are the layout decisions that I have made for the poster. The information each of the shuttles has been placed in the lower left hand corner of the poster at 7pt.

Envelope Design

This is my design for the envelope that will become part of my stationary set. I designed this immediately after having looked at the stationary set for the first time.

My intentions were to make this piece of design fit in perfectly with the other final designs, most of all the compliment slip that is more or less of the same format.

The watermark, which is of the second part of the logo is something that I will also include across the range.

Stationary Set So Far

This is how my stationary looks so far. I am happy with the way they work together as they definitely look like they are representing the same company.

Looking at the designs together I can see how important it is to keep aspects of the design the same for each. The thin blue lines that divide some of the contact info work really well and I also like how the logo is situated in the top right hand corner of the letter-headed paper and compliment slip.

however there are dissimilarities between the set that need to be changed in order for them to be called a set.

The water marks on need to be kept the same for each of the pieces. I would also like to include one for the back of the business card.

The writing on the business card also needs to be changed to black to make it in keeping with the the rest of the text.

This is the final design for my letter headed paper with the new logo and new water mark. I feel that I am at a point in the project in which all the products are coming together nicely and also feel that there is a definite identity being formed.

I am interested in how these different pieces will look together in a set because it is important that they all bear similar traits so they look like they belong and represent the same company.

This is my final business card. I am very pleased with the outcome and think that it delivers a very sharp and professional message as well as showing contemporary design influences.

I am also considering what could be done to this design when it is printed in terms of print finishes and processes.

The logo on the front could be very effective if it was embossed of even spot varnished. This is something that I will be looking into.

I will also need to consider what stock the business cards should be printed onto.

When it came to designing the back of the business card I wanted to design something that was clear, obvious and to the point. My reason for having this attitude was because I felt that the front of the business card had already done the hard part of grabbing someones attention.

All the back needed to do was to communicate the necessary contact information and the persons name.

all these designs are very simple and after having completed them I felt that the most effective designs were centralised.

A variant of this design will be selected for my final business card.

The spiral is meant to represent progress and advancement of the company as well as the focal point for a sophisticated measuring device that my company will also be producing.

I am very pleased with this design and some people think that this should become the new logo for Metrological Advancements.

I am inclined to agree.

These are variations of the design that I have taken forward. I selected this design because, as well as being eye catching I thought it also added nicely to the logo.

it is also quite a contemporary and modern and makes the logo look more original rather than the corporate logos we see on a day to day basis.

Business Card Variations

These are some business card designs that I have done for the position of C.E.O (Chief Executives Officer) at Metrology Advancements.

The main job of a business card is to be noticed. I have designed these cards with this a head of anything else.

As well as being eye catching and noticeable the business cards must also exert a professional touch so they are not picked up then simply chucked away.

These designs above all have different methods of initially attracting the attention of a potential employer, and found that some above others have worked better in terms of what I want people to see my company.

Final Letter-heads

This is the final variant that I have chosen for the first letter-head design. I have chosen it for its easy to read and classic format. I also like the idea of having the logo of the company centralised because it gives the the company and aura of importance.

This is a design that I have decided to drop to make way for the more original second design. This was a decision that did not come with ease. my reasons for doing this can be found below.

This is my final design for the second idea that I had for the design of the letter-head. This has been chosen because of its fairly unique layout and also its easy locatable contact information details.

After getting feed back from my course mates I have decided that this will be the final design for the letter-head. This has been decided because it mostly looked cleaner than the the other design and the fact that it was more original than the other.

There was some concern that the corporate companies would not care for a letter-head with an originality as long as they conducted themselves with in a professional manner.

However it is my opinion that a fresh way of presenting information is always a good thing as long as the information is not harder to digest, which is this case it is not.

It is also my view that this would send a message of youthful enthusiasm to companies as well as showing an experienced and professional touch.

These variations of the letter-head have been designed with the intention of being more original than other designs I have seen but at the same time being as equally legible for readers, most importantly other businesses.

I am happy with the outcome of these designs. I think that the layout is pretty original and the important contact information is also clearly readable for the viewer.

I think that this one of these designs or at least a variant of these will be chosen as my final letter-head.

This is one design that I have decided to develop further for my company letter-head. I feel that this design is a fairly classic way of designing a letter-head but also feel that it is a design that enables the person to read the information in the right heirachy.

Now that the logo has been designed it is time to start designing a range of products that will underpin the companies Identity.

I have been thinking of what printed material companies produce and this is the the list that I have compiled:

These products could easily be designed and work very well together as range of products for this brief. When it comes to designing this printed material I will be thinking of:

Final Logo

This is my final logo. It represents what the company speacialises in as well as who they are. There is also a very well balanced medium between the type part and image part of the logo.

Now that the logo has been completed, I am very keen to what it looks like.

This logo will alway be in development throughout this brief as certain formats and print process may force me to make modifications, or if I find a better way of presenting the logo and their ethos I will change it.

Final Typeface Choice Variations (Futura)

These are some variations of the final logo with the final selected typeface 'Futura'. This typeface has been chosen because it is slender and long and I think it balances out the image very well.

I have also been experimenting with different weight and opacity of the text. This was done to try and match the different opacity's of the image part of the logo.

After some decision making and some feedback from people in the year I have decided to pick the blue logo with the opacity of the 'A' dropped to 60 percent.

Now that the image side of the logo has been completed, I can begin to focus in the type side.

the ISSUU document above contains some ideas for the where the type should be situated, what weight is most appropriate and also what typeface would be best suited to the job. I have also taken into consideration that the chosen typeface will have to the main typeface used in all the company's products to sustain the consistency of the overall identity that I have created.

Some of these typefaces work well. For example Helvetica bold Italic is very legible but also doesn't take too much impact off the image side of the design.

There are some fonts however that do not work well, at all. I these typefaces have mostly been obtained from free font download webistes.

They are not complimentary in any sense of the word and through everything off balance. I feel that a much plainer and less decorative type is required to achieve a better balance for the overall logo.

These logos have been experimented with by dropping and increasing the opacity in order to achieve different levels of tone. I am pleased with all of them however some are more eye catching than others.

Informed Logo Colour Variations

From my contextual research I have found the there are three main areas of Metrological study. I thought that this would be a great thing to incorporate into my logo in order to give it more depth and a better concept.

These are some colour variations of the new logo idea. The three sloping shapes represent the three main studies of the science of measurement, 'metrology'. They also form the 'M' for the metrological and also half the 'A' for Advancements.

This is an idea that I think is very strong and one that works on a number of different levels.

The blue and red colour variants are also ones that I want to take further. I am also keen on experimenting with the idea of a 2 tone logo as this will give it more visual depth.

Regroup Time

It has come to my attention that I am getting a little carried away with designing my racing team skin livery.

I have noticed that from contextual research and some guidance from tutors that the main bulk and focus of this brief is to create a brand and identity.

My company will still be designed around a metrological ethos, but instead of thinking of how I can design that for use on a car, I need to think of how it will function purely as a metrology brand. This will be the finished identity that will be placed on the car, however the car is just a medium for doing this and plays no significant role in the influence of the brand and what they do.

With these new principles in mind I have decided to create a range of products that will best be suited for a metrology company.

It will only be after this has been achieved that I can start thinking about using a racing team as a format for the identity of the brand.

These are some colour variations of the logo I developed earlier. I have experimented with quite few different variations but at present none of them really jump out at me.

All of these logos contain black, so maybe this is something that I need to address.

This is one of the logos that I want to take forward and develop further. The idea is that it forms a final image of an M which will stand for the word metrological. It has also been formed out of an M and an A which stand for metrological advancements.

This development was drawn out on technical drawing paper so as to achieve accurate measurements before scanning it into Illustrator.

These are some of the variations of the logo that have been done in Illustrator. I am pleased with the results and think that the logo works effectively at communicating the name of the company.

These photos are of some log development for my company logo. My main focal point in creating this design is to make the 'M' and the 'A' fuse together to form one image that will be supported by type.

At this stage in the development I am enjoying experimenting with different methods of blending characters together although I do feel that my practice would benefit with some typographic knowledge.

Lotus Exige Livery Design

Over the summer I was asked to design a livery for a lotus Exige S that would be delivered sometime next year. I thought that this would be a good live brief to include as one of four of my major briefs for this module.

As the client only wanted me to design that the livery of the car to his specifications, I did not feel that this was strong enough to include as a major brief on its own.

I have therefore decided that I will add more depth to the brief so that I can include it as one of my majors.

What can I do to give the brief more depth?

I have decided that as well as producing a livery for the car I will create and brand a racing team.
This will then involve producing a whole range of products enabling me to turn it into a major brief.

The idea is that the team will be new to the circuit and needing to establish themselves as a competitive and established racing team.

The Outside of Imitate modern

This is a vectored image that I created from an original photo I found on the internet. The future proof logo has been placed in the centre of the main window and the opacity has been dropped so people can still see the inside of the gallery.

Inside the Gallery

This is how I imagine the exhibition to look like from the inside. I would like the work that was displayed to be shown in a large format on a completely blank wall with lots of space so that nothing is taken away from the work.

This is an super enlarged version of my poster that has been made into a banner that would wrap around a building. I think that this would be a very clever way of grabbing peoples attention and letting them know about the gallery.

This is my final design for the flyer. I am pleased with the outcome of the design an think that there is a nice balance in both the front and back.
the slopping line theme that has been a running theme in the whole of the project is something that I have become very fond of. The text on top of this design is very legible and bold which makes for n easy digest of information.

The gradient is also something that I will try and factor in to my designing more as I think that it has gicen the whole project a brilliant touch. I will be careful, however that I don't over use it.

These are all different variations of the same design for the front of the Futureproof Flyer.

As I was designing these flyers I came to realise that I had already designed a perfectly good poster that could be shrunk to fit an A5 flyer format with great ease. It seems somehow pointless to keep designing for something that has already been designed. This may appear to sound like a cop out but I think that this only gives further credit to the design o the poster and it flexibility to work in both large and small scale formats.

This is my final ticket design. I decided to go for a more traditional stance as I had to abandon the previous concept.

All things considered I think that this format of ticket works very well, its been around for years so it must be alright!

all of the essential information to do with the exhibition is displayed on the ticket including the galleries website. The Radiation U.K logo is also situated in the top left and along the tear line.

I would like to print a number these and also to have the logo along the tear line foil blocked. This would give the ticket a very professional feel as well as adding a bit of depth to the overall design.

Ticket Design Ideas

I thought that it would be a good idea to add some tickets to the range of deliverables for this brief. I think that this will give the project a professional finishing touch as well as rounding off the project.

I originally decided to design the tickets in a circular format to match the Futureproof logo. I also came up with a concept that involved placing the 'Nuclear Threat' text on the side of the ticket that would be torn off and disposed of. This would send an anti-nuclear message to the people attending the exhibition.

However, this was something that I would regard later on, to be a fairly weak concept as the person doing the ripping off and disposing would not be the guests but a member of staff from the gallery, meaning the message would not have reached its desired target.

This concept was then abandoned and the means of creating a more traditional and practical ticket design were set about on.

Final Future Proof Poster Final

This is my final poster design for the promotion of the Futureproof exhibition. The reason why I have chosen this particular design is because I think the hierarchy of information absorbed is pretty much spot on.

I also like the linear structure of the design and generally they way everything is layered out on the page. Even though the design of the poster is fairly narrow and tall, it doesn't look off balance because the logos of the exhibition and the charity on either side balance the design out.

Future Proof Event Poster Designs

These are some poster designs that I have created to promote the Futureproof event. When creating these posters I made sure to keep the design similar to the brochure as the design in that has created a very strong identity for the futureproof.

I also didn't want the design to be too cluttered so only the fundamental pieces of information will be displayed.

Future Proof: An Exhibition Brochure

This photo shows all five variants of the brochure, each with a different poster on the back. I decided when I was in print to produce some stickers so that I could make some belly bands to hold the brochures down.

It also gives a great finishing and professional touch to the set.

These are photos of my final brochure design. After a lot of work has been put into this it is nice to be able to look and an appreciate something tangible rather than just starring at images on a screen.

One of the most fiddliest jobs I had to do when creating this brochure was the folding and is hindsight I should have taken more time to measure the folds more accurately to make it easier.

I am very pleased with how the brochure works as a whole and the colours have come out better than expected.

These scans show my first attempt at printing downstairs in the digital print room. I was happy with the clarity of the designs and the readability of the text however there were some things that I had to change before I printed again.

When the front cover was folded over to complete the folding process, the logo was slightly to the left rather than centered. This was because I had not allowed for creep, which is the space the is consumed by the fold. I am therefore going to have to compensate for this and align the logo slightly to the right.

The second major thing was the amount of spelling mistakes and use of bad grammar there was. These must be corrected before being sent to print.

Brochure / Final Layout And Gradient Choice

This is my final design for the Brochure. I am very pleased with the all aspects of the design, including the concept of the fold, the way it reads and its content.

I am also pleased with the final gradient choice of blue and red. This colour scheme works well with the whole design and also compliments the Radiation U.K logo.

Now all that needs to be done is the printing.... fingers crossed.

This ISSUU document contains gradient variations that I will be using for the logo and the shapes that the text will sit on throughout the document. Some of these experiments work better than others. But overall I am pleased with the results and have decided that I will incorporate this design into the final design.

Gradient Experimentation / Future Proof Logo

This is my attempt at creating a perfectly blended gradient that runs smoothly from green to yellow. To do this I created a lot of gradient levels so that the shifts in colour would not become obvious.

This gradient was created by mirroring the colours on one side so they would then match the other side. The gradient angle was then turned to run parallel to the text in the logo.

These screen shots have been taken from when I was experimenting with different colours for the Future Proof logo. I have recently seen some work on a blog that used gradients for a logo that was a similar style to mine.

I decided that to have a little go at experimenting with gradients on illustrator to see what effects I could create.

The technique is something that I have become very fond of and I think that it would look good if it was added as a running theme to the brochure.

These photos of a mock up of my new design. Instead of 8 individual pages there are now 9 so this will enable me to put more information about the gallery, the charity and the cause into the design.

I am also very pleased with the way the viewer will interact with the publication. At first the publication will read as a book until it eventually unfolds into a poster without the person having to turn the page over.

This is a very smart piece of design and I am looking forward to digitally designing the final product.

The above image shows the general layout of the publication.

This is a layout and scale idea that I have had for my brochure publication. The idea is that the information about the art gallery will be displayed and one side and on the other will be a poster design displaying an image that will be displayed the Gallery.

The above image shows the way the reader will view the document and how they will interact with it.

I was pleased with the concept however I was not pleased with the face that the front cover would end up being upside down when the viewer came to reading the final imformation.

The document will fold out into an A2 poster. I think that this scale is suitable for the information that needs to be delivered. This means that there will be 8 sections that will be at A5 scale which is perfect size for people to interact with.

The layout and folding needs to be changed because I think having the logo of the exhibition upside down in sloppy and unprofessional.

What Material Can I Create For The Exhibition?

The exhibition will need a series of promotional material in order to spread the word about the event.

But what promotional material will be best suited for this kind of event?

This brief will allow me to create some really good promotional print. I would also like to see the logo of the exhibition and that of the charity on a range of merchandise.

First things first. I am going to design a fold out brochure publication that will double as a poster. I think this would be a great thing to design and would definitely appeal to my young target audience. It would also spread the name and all the fundamental information out to the public.

This would include important information including the whereabouts of the event and the opening times of the gallery.

Radiation Research U.K / Final Design!

This is my final design for the charity that will partner the exhibition. I am very pleased with the final result and think that the logo works well conceptually and aesthetically.

The logo will work well in partnership to the exhibition because it is crisp and eye catching. Although this logo is a lot more corporate than the contemporary design of the exhibition I think that the two logos will compliment each other.

It also is in keeping with maintaining the events realistic stature and this is something that is a priority in maintaining.

Radiation Logo Type Layout Variations

These designs contain some type and layout design that I have done in order to complete the Radiation U.K logo. These designs were done before I made the choice to shorten the name of the charity.

Some of these designs look O.K, but I feel that the weight and balance of the type is a bit poor and skew-if.

Hopefully when it comes designing the layout for the type using the shortened name I wont encounter the same problem

Radiation U.K Final Image Design Colour Variations

These are some colour variations that I designed of the final image in photoshop. The logos have been made by reducing either then Cyan, Magenta, Yellow or Black, or a combination of the four.

The hue and saturation has also been experimented with to obtain even more variations.

Some of these colour combinations work well, others do not. I think that the original design made in Illustrator is still my favourite and the one whose colours work the best.

These are the two images that I will be using in my logo.

The colour image shall be used in the main log and the greyscale one used as small logo to be used on the back of publications. It is through previous experience that I discovered it is always good to have greyscale version of a logo.

I am pleased with the outcome o the logo. The way the colour and tones work are very effective because it focus's all the attention around a single atom. the single realisation of research company stiving to better the world.

The logo also represents Radiation U.K as being at the very heart of their professional field

Radiation U.K Design Development 4 / Variations With Colour

These designs have all been made from the original spiral logo that was poster previous. I turned the logo into a live paint group, added the colour and then expanded it so I could delete sections of the design to create different images.

I am very pleased with the outcomes of these logos as they are colourful and bold and just as importantly they keep the original concept that I intended for them, a singular atom surrounded by a mass of atomic paths.

These images are designs that will enable me to add groups of colour to them.

These designs are less concept driven but the focus of the atomic structure is still the main feature.

The many circles around the the centralized atom are the oaths other atoms would take. This kind of symbol is very well recognised as being nuclear related.

These are some more logos that I have developed. They still all use the same concept as before although this time the atomic paths represent 2 backwards 'R's formed around a single atom

I think this logo works well as it represents a concentrated unity. I Still think that the logo looks too flat and that adding colour to a simple line design like this wouldn't make it look any better.

I will continue my efforts to design a more attractive and colourful logo!!

This ISSUU Document contains the design development for my first attempt at a logo design.

I wanted to use the image of an arrow that was formed out of atomic paths. A symbol that is well recognised as being nuclear.

The reason I wanted an arrow is to show the progress the charity is making in terms of the work and research they were doing.

I am fairly pleased with the concept behind the ideas, although the logo at the moment is quite flat.

I tried incorporating the some text but the font choice is not suitable for the image.

Future Proof Charity?

Now that the exhibition has been named and branded it seems like a good time to come up with a name and a logo design for the charity that will be partners in the event.

The reason that I want a charity to be partnered in the event is because it will give the exhibition a deeper meaning and depth as well as making it seem more realistic and sincere.

The charity has to link with the cause otherwise there is no point in having one at all.

What will the charity's cause be?

I think, given recent events in Japan and one of the subjects of the exhibition, that the charity should be related to something about radiation.

Charity Concepts:

A charity that supports victims of Nuclear accidents.
A charity that produces radiation sickness medicine.
A charity that is fighting to abolish nuclear power.
A research charity that is developing new radiology equipment and finding out the effects of different kinds of radiation.

From making this list it is clear to see that this charity would be very unique. I have decided that the charity should cover more than one subject of Radiation to give them more purpose and meaning to the project.

The charity will be a research charity that study the effects of radiation so that they can better the world. This will include them making medicine, radiology equipment, and also providing humanitarian aid to country's in nuclear crisis. E.g. Japan.

Future Proof Logo / Gradient Variations

These are some gradient variations that I have tested for my final Future Proof logo. I am very pleased with some of the results from these colour tests.

My particular favourites are the top three. These colours really compliment each other well, giving the logo more depth making the text pop.

This is something that I definitely want to incorporate into my design, However I think I will stick with the dark grey for use in publications.

These gradient logos would look very nice screen-printed onto a cover of a publications. Maybe this is something that I should consider.

This ISSUU document contains colour variations of the final Future Proof Logo. Although I will most likely end up using the dark grey version I thought id see what the design would looked like with some colour.

I guess im just trying to brighten the place up a bit.

i was quite pleased to see that the desing looked good in colour. In particular the blue and red.

This has given me the idea to do some more variations using gradients.

Future Proof Logo / Shade Variations

These are some tonal variations that I have done for the final design. I have done this in order to see if the image would become clearer to view if it was either a light or darker tone.

As the text is white it seems more obvious to choose a darker tone as this would make the text easier to read.

This is my final logo that I will be using for the exhibition. It has been slanted at 10 degree angle to give it some more edge. I also feel that the type that I have created reads better at a slant.

Isn't it funny how the world works.
