Visual Language

Duplicate

Disect

Compress

In this lesson we where given three words
  1. Compress
  2. Duplicate
  3. Disect
We where given a sheets containing various typefaces for the letter A. The task was to visually communicate the three letter using the A's we were given

Alphabet Soup Part 2

These are my final prints

This is the typeface with all the characteristics of Robyn's personality on there. Upon attending a crit I was advised that black leather might look good on the typeface. However I was rapidly running out of time.

I wanted to try and make the colour as vibrant as possible. On further research into The Rocky Horror Show, I found that crimson red PVC was worn a lot, so I decided to chose that for the letterform.

I then experimented with placing puppet strings above the typeface to see if there were any areas of the font I could manipulate. I found that I could possibly link the puppet strings to the swirls coming off the font.

I then experimented with zips. I decided that a good effect to create would be if the letterforms look like they were taking off a layer. This would tie in nicely with The Rocky Horror Show theme.

This is the The brittanic bold typeface, I have experimented with swirls to see what effects I could create.

I eventually decided on Brittanic bold, which is the furthest typeface to the right. I chose it because it has areas where the type is very thick, which would allow for illustrations within and because it also had one side where it appeared very thin. This would allow me to manipulate the font with more ease.

These are the three letterforms that I experimented with.
  1. Myriad Pro
  2. Rockwell Extra Bold
  3. Brittanic Bold

I decided that I would try and go for a bold typeface as this was another aspect of Robyn's personality that I wanted to try and get across.

Research for The Rocky Horror Show

The usage of black leather, PVC, and zips could work very well on a letter form. I think this could make a visually engaging typeface.

Dame Edna

Dame Edna has a very vibrant and confident personality which I think suits Robyn well

Research looking into manipulation

I think that the use if puppet strings would look very effective. Also it is a a clever way to represent manipulation.

Upon gathering all the information we were then asked to come up with four words that best described that person.

From the information that I had acquired I came up with these words to use for Robyn

  1. Vibrant (spain, Dame Edna)
  2. Bold (woolly mammoth)
  3. manipulative (her chosen super power)
  4. Kinky (The Rocky Horror Show)

This is my brainstorm that helped me on what direction to go

For the second part of this brief we where put into pairs. We were then given a sheet with some questions that we had to ask our partners. We were given the task of creating an entire typface, with glyphs, using the aspects of our partners personality from the answers. However we had to manipulate an existing typeface.

My partner was Robyn and her are her answers.

What was your earliest memory?
Bouncing on my knees somewhere hot like spain.

Which living person do you most admire and why?
Dawn French because she has funny and warming personality.

What is your most treasured possession?

These are my final designs

This is what the letterforms looked like after I had traced the details of the car components onto them.

Because the Haynes manual components are very detailed I decided that the font should be quite simple so that none of the emphasis and effect would be lost. I Decided on a font called Myriad pro that I found in Adobe Illustrator.

My plan was to trace various parts of the Haynes manuals onto the letterforms and then transfer them on new print outs.

I then to traced over various parts in the Haynes manual to see what effect I could create. I decided to use every aspect of the Haynes manual diagrams including various dotted lines, numbers and the engine components themselves.

I decided that it would be really interesting to look at the deconstruction of car engines, as this could make a really detailed piece of design. I decided to look at some Haynes car manuals on the internet to see if this idea could work.

These are the fonts that I considered to use for the word
DECONTRUCT

I began to experiment with typefaces to see which ones would be suited for the word DECONTRUCT.
I decided that I would need a fairly complex font so that there would be more for me to work with rather than a plain font which would be quite challenging to pull apart.

This is a my brainstorm that I used to make me start thinking about the word and come up with some ideas that I could use to take the project further.

These are some of the objects that I thought could represent the word deconstruct.

  • Buildings
  • Engines
  • Body parts
  • Brain
  • Trees
  • Nature
  • Rubix cubes
  • Explosions

For this project we where asked to select a word from the randomizer. I selected the word

DECONSTRUCT.

We where then asked to come up with a set of 10 letterforms that represented this word.

Summer Project

For this project we were asked to create an alphabet that worked as a set with each letter based on an aspect of our personalities.

These are my initials J and D

How To Continued

The top image is our final logo with the company name boy girl. Below that is my sticker that I used to place on the packaging of the shower head and the witty tag-line... Use your head.

We decided that we would base the logo on common toilet symbols that can be found everywhere and are visually understanding

These are some of the type faces that where considered for the shower pack.

Brainstorm

To get the creative juices flowing we started to brainstorm some ideas and we quickly decided that it would be based around helping future students and freshers.
One of our first ideas was to design a series of posters for boys and girls advising them on shower hygiene and ettiqutte to make the process as fast and as stress free as possible.
we decided that in order to make the posters intresting and engaging we needed to base them
around a theme. We decided that humour would be the best way to get our message across as
you can imagine a lot of humourous and embarrasing incidents involving showers!

It was decided that we would place the posters in and around student accomodation and
student hang outs.

When we were thinking of the best places to place them we thought that we could design
something that would actually help students rather than just giving them advice.
We started thinking about the problem at hand and thought it would benefit students better if we
gave them some useful items to help them out with the situation

Shower Pack for Students
  • A helpful pack to help students who are moving into halls where the shower facilities are cramp
  1. Bath Robes
  2. Soap
  3. Rubber gloves for removing hair
  4. Spare shower head
  5. Mop
  6. Shower Curtain
  7. Varruca socks
  8. Shower gel
  9. Towels
  10. Tooth brush and tooth paste
Humorous and Witty Tag-lines

  1. Shower head - Use your head
  2. Soap - Dont drop the soap

How To?

For this brief we were given the task of solving the problem...

How do you fit 13 people in 2 showers.

This was based on a problem a girl in our year had with her student accommodation. We were to design a campaign that would solve the problem for future students or freshers like ourselves.
